VMWare plans to discontinue the VMWare Server line and has placed that functionality in VMWare Workstation 8.x:
Remote shared mode for Workstation virtual machines.
VIX connectivity to Workstation-based virtual machines operating in shared mode (through remote connections) is a new feature, intended to replace VMware Server. For details, see the information about “shared mode” on the VIX API Reference
page for VixHost_Connect.
There's a new hostType for VMWare Workstation connectivity, which from what I can see, is not available in VMWareTasks 1.6:
With vCenter Server, ESX/ESXi hosts, and VMware Server 2.0, use VIX_SERVICEPROVIDER_VMWARE_VI_SERVER. With VMware Workstation, use VIX_SERVICEPROVIDER_VMWARE_WORKSTATION.
With VMware Workstation (shared mode), use VIX_SERVICEPROVIDER_VMWARE_WORKSTATION_SHARED. With VMware Player, use VIX_SERVICEPROVIDER_VMWARE_PLAYER. With VMware Server 1.0.x, use VIX_SERVICEPROVIDER_VMWARE_SERVER.
I would very much appreciate having that support in your next release. Though I've not invested a great deal of effort into this yet, I would rather avoid building/maintaining my own version of this. I'd be glad to help test.
